There is a world-wide movement to open up access to research information. DRIVER (Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research) is working to create a European network of repositories to disseminate and use research information it regroups (DAREnet - www.darenet.nl) in the Netherlands, (SHERPA - www.sherpa.ac.uk) in the United Kingdom, (DINI) in Germany, (a network in construction starting from the university of Ghent - www.driver-repository.be) in Belgium and (Archives-ouvertes.fr) in France.
DRIVER is an EU-funded 18 month project, started in June 2006 which sets out to build a testbed for a future knowledge infrastructure of the European Research Area. DRIVER, with ten European partners, aims to deliver any form of scientific output, including scientific/technical reports, working papers, pre-prints, articles and original research data to the various user groups.
