There were two peaks of deposits, as highlighted on the graph above.
First, the spring period doesn't show a momentum caused by the lockdown, but rather the transfer from ProdInra and Irstea Publications archives to HAL-INRAE portal: this operation represented more than 62.000 documents in total.
The second period at the end of the year reflects the CRAC campaign, a CNRS requirement for its searchers to deposit all of their scientific production of the year on HAL; from 2020, the full text of journal and conference articles is mandatory. The CCSD User assistance team was highly requested: from around 33 tickets per work day from January to October, the team suddendly had to deal with around 89 tickets per work day in November and December!

HAL has come a long way since its early age, to say the least!
Apart from the huge growth in available documents, and developments for new functionnalities to facilitate auto-archiving, HAL's looks have also evolved a lot.
This screenshot from the WayBack Machine by Internet Archive, dated from November 2006 (the oldest we could reach), is a clear evidence. The teen years brought a well-deserved makeover, in 2014. What will adulthood look like?
